Small size, Great lens, Excellent image quality up to ISO 800, hotshoe, Bright, sharp OLED screen, Wireless Flash capability
Image quality above ISO 1600 not great, Lack of grip makes for less secure hold, Fiddly rear input dial, Price of optional EVF
The Holy Grail for serious enthusiasts shopping for a compact is for a camera that achieves the highest possible image quality, with full control, in as small a package as is practical. The Olympus XZ-1 comes as close to achieving this as any camera ye...
Excellent image quality, Sharp fast lens, Fun and creative art filters,
No AEL/AFL button, Could use more physical controls, Disappointing video quality
At its current street price of $499, the Olympus XZ-1 is unquestionably an expensive camera, especially when several very good competitors are currently priced $100 less. On paper the XZ-1 isn’t necessarily even better specified, but don’t be fooled by...

On-board flash, operation simplifying Live Guide, the E-PL1 offers the cheapest entry point to date into the Pen camera range
Plastic construction where the E-P1 and E-P2 offered steel, pared down ISO and LCD
The XZ-1 is in effect a Micro Four Thirds E-PL2 “lite”, smaller, lighter, sharing many features but omitting the ability to swap the lens on the front. But why would you want to anyway when it’s as good as the one provided?...
Fa...

F1.8 to F2.5 zoom lens is great for shooting in low-light environment; good picture quality, especially for RAW photos; decent performance.
Menu interface can be confusing for new users; cannot adjust size of focusing box.
We would have given the XZ-1 an Editors' Choice award if not for the unappealing menu interface and the fixed size of the focusing box. But if these are not dealbreakers for you, this Olympus possibly is one of the best advanced compact you can get on...
Fastest optical zoom lens on the market / Excellentquality lens, Fast autofocus in most situations, Very nice screen (apart from the smear), Good choice of automatic and manual settings, Compact design, good build quality
Image smoothing too pronounced at 800 ISO, No stereo sound in video mode, No button to save the exposure setting, no customisable button, Limited battery life (well under 200 shots), The stabilisation system could be better
The Olympus XZ-1 is another expert compact that could have got five stars if it had a better video mode. For those of you who aren't bothered about video, the XZ-1 is an excellent camera that's compact enough to take wherever you go, since it fits easi...
