  • Superb design and build quality; excellent controls and layout for experienced photographers; compact size combined with dSLR-esque versatility
  • Every time you buy a new lens unit, you're buying a new sensor; different lens units include differently sized sensors; generally expensive
  • The Ricoh GXR camera system shouldn't work, but it does. Because every lens unit also includes a sensor, the system is pricey, and the variation in sensor sizes means you won't necessarily get dSLR photo quality all the time. Yet, as a tool for taking...

  • The image quality is good in ideal conditions, comparable with the best compacts from Canon and Panasonic. Images go soft in low contrast light. The lens, with its commendably modest zoom range, focuses quickly and accurately.
  • The price! The combination as tested costs $1350 – and that is for a compact camera. The Canon G11 and Panasonic LX3 cost hundreds of dollars less. The A12 module, with 50mm lens and APS sensor, costs $1000 – making the combination more expensive than ...
  • Because the GXR is unique it can’t be compared with any other camera, but also because it is unique it raises the question: Who is it for? What problem does it solve? Camera aficionados to whom we have shown the GXR all look at it and say: “Interesting...

  • Abstract:  By Sean Reid I must start by saying that the following is not a review or even a mini-review. Michael has asked me to share some of my impressions of the Ricoh GXR-A12 and these comments, of course, certainly won't cover all aspects of the camera (th...

  • The market for GXR camera is for people who don’t want the bulk of an SLR, but who want the additional option from “Auto” of having the power of additional control of raw photos. As you learn more with familiarity, you can program the G...

  • Cool idea; Very well built; Great menu and controls; DNG as the RAW format
  • Focus is slow and weak; Limited lens options; Short battery life; Expensive compared to competition

  • Compact; stunningly sharp results, particularly with 50mm portrait lens and 12-megapixel sensor combo; component parts feel solid, well made, and attach and detach easily.
  • Auto white balance performance variable; busy menu screens and small typeface make function searches fiddly.
  • While the GXR sounds like good news for photographers looking for a high-quality shoot-from-the-hip camera for street and travel photography, getting set up doesn’t come cheap. The basic body is a suggested $549, to which must be added $830 for the...

  • The Ricoh GXR A12 50mm F/2.5 macro can take brilliant photos, but its auto-focus system is unreliable and painfully slow and it's far too expensive. ...
